Assignment: What writing skills could you pass on to others? Write a list of three-to-five of your best writing tips. Include examples where you can.
My biggest struggle with writing is not knowing where to start. And so, because of this I usually end up putting off whatever writing I need to complete until the last possible second. As a result, most of my work is not as good as I know it could be. Honestly, I have not figured out the best way to overcome this, except to force myself to sit down and just start writing. So, that’s my first tip: Write whatever comes to your mind. Do not worry whether it is perfect the first time around. You can always go back and edit it later anyway.
My second tip is to use your imagination. When you use your imagination in your writing, you are allowing yourself to not just state the facts. In my opinion, what makes writing interesting is when people share how their imagination sees it, not just how it is in real life.
My third tip for writing is to know why you are writing. Know all the answers to the questions: why? How? When you know why you are writing, you know what you want to write, which only makes it easier to sit down to start writing.
An extra bonus tip: read other writers’ works. When you read other writers, you broaden your knowledge of writing in general. Sometimes you can learn a new word; sometimes you become familiar with their writing style; but it can also inspire you. Not inspire you to copy their work, but inspire you with your own ideas. Be unique and write in your own style.
XOXO,
Janey Lou
